Sensory Week begins in Kindergarten

Sensory Week begins in Kindergarten at LFIH

The week started with a short choreography presented to parents, who were invited to share this moment with the pupils.

The children then embarked on a learning journey centred on the five senses. Once on board their “plane”, they discovered that their suitcase was empty and had to organise what they needed for the trip using their senses: observing, touching, smelling, listening and tasting.

The activity continued with the introduction of their sensory passport, which will guide the week’s exploration.

A journey to the land of sounds

As part of the sensory journey organised for Early Years Education Week, our pupils continued their exploration with a session dedicated to the world of sounds.

Accompanied by their usual teachers and the music teacher, the children discovered the difference between sound and music by listening to and identifying sounds in their surroundings.

They talked about pleasant sounds, such as the sea or the wind, and others that were less pleasant.

Through listening games, they also identified animal sounds, an activity that the youngest children performed just as well as the older ones.

To finish, they completed their sound chart, drawing scenes full of sounds they like: the beach, the mountains or nature.

A wonderful experience that stimulated listening, imagination and language.

Journey to the Land of Smells and Flavors

A new stage of the Sensory Journey for kindergarten students at the Lycée Français International de La Havane focused on exploring smells and flavors.

Children discovered and recognized familiar scents such as cinnamon, vanilla, and fruits like passion fruit, as well as less pleasant ones, including certain medicines. With their eyes closed, they tried to guess the smells presented by their teacher, developing their sensory awareness and memory.

The activity also helped expand students’ food-related vocabulary, as they explored and sorted different foods according to their preferences. While many loved chocolate 🍫, other foods, such as radish, received more mixed reactions.

In our multicultural kindergarten environment, the activity also highlighted that people experience tastes and smells differently, an enriching discovery that encourages openness and exchange.
